In June 2011, Civmec was awarded a contract for supply, fabrication and assembly of the first tandem iron ore rail car dumper. We were subsequently awarded contracts for a further two tandem rail car dumpers in March and May 2012.
A dedicated and highly skilled team delivered the project from Civmec’s waterfront manufacturing facility in Henderson, Western Australia.
To ensure that Metso received a world class outcome, the Civmec team were engaged to manufacture the state of the art equipment to the most exacting specifications. Metso’s rotary railcar dumper and positioner systems have set the worldwide industry standard with the most technologically advanced list of features for system dependability, efficient operation, and long service life. The design of the equipment allows for lower maintenance and higher, more efficient material output flow, and ease and safety of maintenance is also improved through a reduction of overall components.
Civmec’s highly skilled multi-disciplinary team undertook the fabrication and assembly of the 450 tonne units. Overhead cranage capability enabled the 180t bare cage to be lifted and transferred (80m) onto the stillage ready for shop assembly of further components. The large assembly bay allowed this slow-moving project to be manufactured without causing interruptions to other projects running simultaneously. The rotating machine has an operating lifespan of 30 years and has been welded to AS1554.5 FP.
In recognition of the high-level of quality and technical complexity required to successfully deliver the project, Civmec and Metso received the Engineering Projects Steel Design Award from the Australian Steel Institute.
